Shockwave
Shockwave is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to treat acute and chronic pain in myofascial tissue. Shockwave compresses and manipulates targeted soft tissues resulting in pain reduction, increased circulation, and potential tissue remodeling.
Shockwave treats conditions such as
Shoulder pain: rotator cuff injuries
Elbow pain: tennis and/or golfer’s elbow
Foot pain: plantar fasciitis and Achilles’ tendinopathy
Knee pain: patella tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
Back pain: low back pain
Wrist or finger pain: flexor tendinopathy
Hip muscles and greater trochanter pain
What to expect during your shockwave appointment
Your first treatment should be a 55 minute PT evaluation where we will discuss your history, concerns, plans, goals for treatment, and determine if shockwave is an appropriate modality for you.
If shockwave is appropriate for you, here is what to expect:
Your therapist will gel to ensure that the shockwave device glides smoothly over the problem area
We will start with a low intensity and will continue to adjust according to your needs
During the session, you may feel a tapping, pulsing, or mild discomfort, especially if the area is inflamed or sensitive
A session typically lasts approximately 15 minutes
Your PT will then discuss next steps
How many sessions does it take to see results?
Most people notice improvements within 3-6 sessions, though it may take up to 10, with sessions spaced one week apart. For optimal results, we recommend combining shockwave therapy with therapeutic exercise.
