What does core strengthening actually mean? Which muscles are the core? It depends on who you’re asking. From a “protect your back” perspective, the core is your innermost layer of trunk muscles that keep your spine stable (see second pic). From an aesthetic perspective (like you want a six pack and a toned mid section) there are many layers of muscles on top of the deep core.
