Hip Abductors
These muscles lie deep to the better known gluteus maximus. They’re kinda like the rotator cuff of the hip. They externally rotate the hip (turnout muscles), and help provide hip joint stability. Some help bring your leg out to the side, one helps bring your leg in. PTs often remember them with the acronym PGOGOQ. Yoga or Pilates professionals sometimes refer to them as the Deep 6. The best known muscle in this bunch is the P, the piriformis. (Also in the first and last picture is the gluteus medius and minimus).
