Biceps and Triceps

The biceps are called biceps because this muscle has 2 heads at the top each with its distinct proximal attachment. The triceps has 3 heads at the top - one that attaches to the shoulder girdle and 2 that attach to the humerus. Both muscles act at the elbow joint to bend the elbow (biceps) and straighten it (triceps). But, since they both cross the shoulder joint, they also act on the shoulder to raise your arm in front of you (shoulder flexion - biceps) and behind you (shoulder extension - triceps).
